Let’s get started!

How to Move Your Pet to Canada from the UK

There are two main ways to get your pet to Canada from the UK: by plane or by car. Most people choose to transport pets by air because it’s faster. But not all pets like flying. If your pet is a big breed, a snub-nosed breed, or gets nervous easily, driving might be better.

Here are some tips if you decide to fly:

  • Choose Direct Flights: Direct flights are faster and less stressful for pets. We help you find the best flight with the shortest travel time.
  • Pick the Right Pet Carrier: Make sure the pet crate is big enough for your pet to sit, stand, and turn around. If it’s too small, airport staff might not let your pet board the plane.

Canada Pet Import Requirements

Health Certifications and Vaccinations

To bring your pet into Canada, they must have proof of a current rabies vaccination or a valid health certificate. If your pet is traveling from Europe, the EU Pet Passport is accepted as proof of their rabies vaccination. Make sure the vaccination is up-to-date before the trip.

Necessary Documentation

The health certificate must clearly identify your pet and it must be approved by a government veterinarian that there has been no rabies outbreak in the country where your pet is coming from, for at least six months before the travel date. The certificate must also confirm that your pet has been living in that country for six months or since birth.

This certificate should be signed by a government-authorized veterinarian who oversees animal imports and exports.

Puppies and Kittens Traveling Without Owner

If you are bringing a dog or puppy under eight months old to Canada, they must be accompanied by their owner. If the owner is not traveling with the pet, or if the pet’s papers are not in the owner’s name, it could be considered a commercial shipment by customs.

In such cases, the pet must have a microchip, a health certificate issued within 48 hours of arrival, and an import permit. Puppies also need to be vaccinated for distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza no earlier than six weeks of age.

Canada Pet Quarantine Rules

Canada does not require pets to go into quarantine as long as you follow all the necessary pet import requirements, such as having the correct health documents and vaccinations. Following these rules ensures that your pet can enter without any extra delays or issues.

Age and Residency Verification

Exporters should provide a declaration confirming the animal's age and its residency status in the UK. The latest Canadian guidelines should always be checked.

Assistance Dogs

Assistance dogs (e.g., guide dogs, hearing dogs) are exempt from restrictions if accompanied by their handler. Unaccompanied assistance animals are treated as commercial animals.

Commercial Exports

Breeders can export dogs under 8 months for temporary purposes (e.g., competitions) without an import permit, provided they show proof of entry into recognized events.

Prohibited Breeds

Pit bulls are banned from entering Ontario. Ensure your dog complies with breed restrictions before exporting.

Inspection Fees Upon Arrival

Upon entry to Canada, dogs and cats will undergo inspection. Visit the CFIA website for details on any inspection fees.

Welfare During Transport

Animals must be transported in compliance with welfare standards, such as those set by IATA for air travel. Transport must adhere to UK animal welfare regulations.

Health Certification for Non-Accompanied Animals

If dogs are not accompanied by their owners, they need a detailed health certificate from a veterinarian confirming their fitness to travel, vaccinations, and the date/time of the examination.

Additional Documents

EU Pet Passports can supplement but not replace the official Export Health Certificate for dogs under 8 months.

Responsibility for Compliance

Exporters should verify all documents and requirements with Canadian authorities to ensure full compliance. If there are discrepancies, contact APHA or DAERA for clarification.
